I seek your assistance in identifying potential Interns for the Garden Education Internship, part of the Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) Research Internship Program. The Shoals Marine Laboratory is jointly operated by UNH and Cornell University on Appledore Island, 6 miles offshore of Rye, NH. The SML Internship program provides a 10-week stipend and room/board for undergraduates beginning 1 June 2015 and each intern is mentored by one or more faculty members and/or educators from UNH, Cornell, or elsewhere. Celia Thaxter’s Victorian Garden on Appledore Island is well known throughout the US. SML has for many years supported the Garden and this year will devote a considerably greater investment through support of two Internships: a Garden Horticulture Internship (care of the garden from seedlings in UNH’s greenhouse through planting and the season on Appledore) and the Garden Education Internship.
The Garden Education Internship will support one intern who will divide his/her time between Strawberry Banke in Portsmouth and Celia’s Garden on Appledore (Wednesday through Friday). Erik Wochholz, Curator of Historical Landscapes at Strawberry Banke, is the mentor for this Internship. On Appledore, the Intern is expected to develop an education program for the weekly 3-4 hr UNH Docent Tour that will involve a short PowerPoint presentation followed by a more extensive guided tour. Additional tasks for the Intern include developing informative signage for the Garden, writing (with the Horticulture Intern) a plan for future Garden Education Programs, and assisting the Horticulture Intern with gardening and developing a sustainable watering and compost system (which should be highlighted in the Education Intern’s presentations).
